ABS-CBN action star and PGT Judge Robin Padilla received netizen and viewer ire after he “forced” a 20-year-old Korean contestant, Kim Jiwan, to speak Tagalog before he could perform his magic trick.
“Magtagalog ka muna bago mo ako kausapin (Speak Tagalog first before speaking to me),” said Padilla, who was asked by Kim if he could be a volunteer for his close-up magic trick.
An Angel’s reply
Padilla’s co-judge Angel Locsin responded by aiding Kim and teaching the contestant several Tagalog words. She then asked for Robin Padilla to help him in his magic trick.
“Iho, Pilipinas Got Talent, magtagalog ka (Young man, Philippines Got Talent, speak Tagalog),” added Padilla after Kim gave his first instruction for the magic trick in English. “Kasi magmumukha kaming katawa-tawa kung mag e-english kami para sayo (We’ll look laughable if we speak English for you).”
Although Padilla apologized afterwards, he remained on his stance about the incident.
“Wala akong pinagsisisihan kasi ako pumupunta din ako sa ibang bansa. Kapag pumupunta ako sa ibang bansa, pinipilit kong malaman kung anong salita doon kasi bisita ka doon. Ikaw ang makikibagay (I have no regrets because I also go to other countries. Whenever I go out of the country, I try to find out about their language as a visitor. You’re the one who has to adjust),” he told reporters last Saturday.
Backlash on social media
Netizens took to social media, expressing their disgust and ire at how Robin Padilla was rude to the contestant.
Many also commented on how the actress, Angel Locsin tried to help the Korean contestant, Kim Jiwan.
